The leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Guy Verhofstadt announced that the international Jean Rey Prize was awarded posthumously to Boris Nemtsov. He said that the prize winner was a Russian politician who “had devoted his life to the struggle for a new Russia – for the Russia which will live in peace with its neighbors, embrace democracy, respect human rights and supremacy of the law”.

The Chairman of the Jean Rey Award Committee, a European Parliament deputy Louis Michel, emphasised that Boris Nemtsov was posthumously honoured “for political courage and staunch loyalty to democracy and civil liberties”. The prize money in the amount of €10,000 will be received by the Nemtsov Foundation established by his daughter Zhanna.
